Research Programs at UNC-Chapel Hill
The School of Medicine at UNC - Chapel Hill expresses its commitment to research through providing a number of research related programs that are available to students.

Carolina Medical Student Research Program (CMSRP): Funding is available for short-term and long-term research (depending on the funding source). Students choose their own mentor and project. For those involved in summer research on the UNC campus, a series of lectures and informal meetings on research related topics augment the research experience. UNC students are given preference, but non-UNC students are welcome to apply if they have a UNC mentor. Application to the following funding sources are all done through the CMSRP:

• NIDDK Short-Term Research Training Grant
• Research Training in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery
• Medical Alumni Association
• Medical Foundation of North Carolina

Distinguished Medical Scholar Program: This two year program provides an academic challenge and training in independent analytical thought to promising UNC medical students.

Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship: The Doris Duke Foundation is supporting medical students to spend a year learning clinical research. The General Clinical Research Center at the University of North Carolina (UNC) is one of 7 centers nationally offering this program. Five medical students will spend a year at UNC performing a clinical research project with a faculty mentor, and will undergo additional training in clinical research. This program is open to UNC and non-UNC medical students..

M.D./MPH: This program is specifically designed for the clinician who is interested in bringing together both clinical and population health perspectives to best serve the health of the public.

M.D./Ph.D.: The primary purpose is to develop a cohort of physician-scientists with a firm commitment to careers in biomedical research and academic medicine.

Small Grants available:

• Bowles Fellows Program: The Bowels Center Fellows Program: This program provides one-year fellowships focused on community outreach activities that address alcohol-related problems and the associated needs of at-risk communities.
• UNC Injury Prevention Research Center: Competitive small grants are awarded to graduate and professional students, medical residents and fellows for research on injury topics.
• Salber-Phillips Award: One or more awards of up to $1,000 are offered to UNC medical students for their work on community-oriented projects that improve the health or well-being of elderly people.
• Lawrence Zollicoffer Community Health Fellowship: This fellowship is awarded to the student who submits an outstanding proposal to undertake a community health project that focuses on the health of minority and under-served communities.
• Scott Neil Schwirck Fellowship: This fellowship is awarded to the student who submits an outstanding research proposal that represents their curiosity, intellectual vigor, enthusiasm for science and research, and above all, a desire to help others.
• Bryan Fellowship: This fellowship offers funding for summer public service projects aimed toward improving the lives of North Carolinians.
• Schweitzer Fellowship: The U.S. Schweitzer Fellows Programs provide community service fellowships for graduate students in health-related professional fields who are dedicated to addressing unmet health needs in their local areas.
• International Opportunities: The International Programs Coordinator in the Office of Student Affairs provides assistance to medical faculty and students planning and organizing international research, study and service projects.
